After making a new jig to shape & cut rearend centers using a rotary table and using a piece of scrap, tho, if I didn't get so antsy, this would have been a keeper, as there was enough material for the tolerances that I need. The key word here being "was". I needed a .200" rim, it's .101". Not enough for the screws.

Very Cool what are you using to set up with?
This will be a rim correct? What will it look like when finished?
Nice work Tom

What I'm using is a mill with a rotary table to get the external shape and the rest on the lathe. It's not a wheel, it's a rearend, tho, only one axle tube has been made so far. I'm waiting on another shipment of alum to do the other axle tube. Then I'll start on the front axle.

I guess the second time's a charm. This is one of my winter projects. (yea, I know the lower links are too long, but, they are staying until I get it up on all fours.) Betcha can't guess what the axles are? (not axle tubes, axles) The front rearend center section is done, short of drilling and one of the axle tubes is mostly done. Now, it's a matter of making knuckles.

Thanks, Txt. Sounds as if you may be in Florida? The front rearend, if all goes as expected, will have clutches, whereas the rear has a spool. (tho, nowhere near done!)

Just out of curiosity, what kind of lathe and mill do you have? I have been wanting to get one of those mini lathe/mill set ups that sell for 800-1000 bucks but don't know anyone that has one that could tell me if they are worth it.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of lathe and mill do you have? I have been wanting to get one of those mini lathe/mill set ups that sell for 800-1000 bucks but don't know anyone that has one that could tell me if they are worth it. Lathe/mills have their place, which is what I have, Smithy 1220LTD."]smithy.com/midas1220ltd.htm]Smithy 1220LTD. Not a bad machine and the best of all of the 3n1's. Tho, if you have the room, I'd go for separate units, ie, a separate lathe & mill. For what I do, the only real drawback is breaking down the lathe to use the mill and vice versa. I'm satisfied and although most of what I machine is aluminum alloy, I have machined steel & titanium. But, no matter what you decide to get, you'll need a slew of tooling to go along with your machine(s), such as a good rotary table, (to do small parts that need to be rotated). The one that I have is a Phase II 8". Plus, you'll need vises, clamping sets, endmills, cutters for the lathe. If you look around, you might be able to buy a good used 3n1, maybe even locally. Just out of curiosity, which 3n1's are you looking at? how wide are the axles and what would you charg to make another set The front axle is 10.75", end to end; the rear is 10.25" end to end. To make another set, email me at RobertMccall@verizon.net Awsome work, be careful Tom will try to get it from you. For reasons such as this is why I have a blind, one-legged chicken armed with an AK standing guard.

After searching the 'net for some 1/5 or 1/6 scale brake cables, I finally managed to find some for $12 EACH at FGPROS.com.....hmmmmm...I don't think so! So, after a little thought, (yea, my brain still hurts from thinking), I made this in about 20 minutes, including lathe time:
