Well this is becoming a long and tremendous project...
I started it out as a crawler but recently accuired a set of Jumbo Kongs and thought why not try...
This may still become a crawler but looking at it with the Huge tires started the wheels rollin...
The last time we looked at the project most of the body work had been done..
But after purchasing a Small block Chevy Die Cast motor from Lightning more body work was required..
1: Cutting the Firewall out and moving it back 1/4 inch to allow the motor to fit was the easy part but after doing so it needed a little more trimming finally creating a recessed firewall to accept the motor correctly. Shaping the Poly styrene sheet into a bath tub look and then instead of glueing it, we Welded the plastic using strips of Plastic and a soldering iron.. Worked great... Perfect welds that only needed some sanding...
2: Moving on to the body a Hood scoop was created to look like an older mopar style Pro Stock hood. Again welding instead of glueing was used for ease of time and to see if it would be strong.. Worked great and again light sanding was needed to make it perfect.
In the rear of the body some Tubs had to be made to fit the new shock towers inplace. Welding again the plastic
we made a pair of Tubs that fit perfectly and sanded easily.
The Windsheilded needed to be trimmed, and we removed finally a total of 1.25 inches to atteive a perfect fit.. More trimming was necessary when looking in a box of parts I had we found some mirrors from a previous project attaching those was easy as only holes had to be cut and the mirrors pushed in place..
3: Adding the new Small block chevy for scale required making custom Motor mounts as well as Moving the Front Shock towers out to the outside frame rails. Recesses where cut in the fire wall to accept the rear exit ports on the Manifolds.
Fitting the motor took some work as the frame rails where made only 3.5 inches wide and the motor is a bit over 4 in total width but it all worked great... Looks complety scale. Finally putting the motor in we had to remove the front Fan from the motor rather than lengthen the body 1 inch made a lot less work for us.
We also cut the Radiator support section back 1/4 inch and moved the radiator to make more room.
4: Once all of the body work was finished the body was shot in a Straight green. We then turned to polishing all of the 1/4 inch aluminum Roll bars and nurf bars as well as some of the frame pieces. The shine was outstanding and with the green color looks perfect.
5: Jumbo Kongs from Imex are used in the pics to give an idea of how big this beast is... We stacked the body and frame ontop of 2 Clodbuster Tires to get the clearance to show the size of this.
The only problem now is whether to leave it with huge Monster Tires or Go back to Juggernaut tires and keep the Smaller 4 inch shocks on the truck? Still looking for a set of HPI savage shocks to make the Monster Beast but if not I will probably come up with something...
What do you think so far?
