The other day after recieving a Jeep body in the mail, decided to start work on it. The body is a
[glow=red,2,300]1955 Jeep M3 B...[/glow]
Problem was do I do a crawler or Get a set of Jumbo Kongs and build a scale monster Jeep Truck?
After thinking about it, a Crawler became the project.
Still have not named it as of yet.
This post will not only be a Build up but also a teaching tool for those interested in building a crawler or something else scale.
1. To start out The project I began taking the beast apart
first removing the underchassis and wheels.
2. Next removed and shaved all of the Un necessary body parts as well as took the chassis completely down to nothing. Saving all of the parts incase later on they may be used. This particular Jeep body came with Soft seats and a Soft top which of course will be used!!LOL
3. The First part of the body to be shaved and reshaped where the rear Fenders. Now with this body being the old style Wanted to copy some of the Crawlers still used today. The CJ and the MJ series where alot alike, so getting ideas from magazines was the easy part...
The Rear fenders had to be bobbed!!!! So out came the Dremel tool as well as 80 Grit sandpaper and a razor blade and the trusty Sharpy felt pen.
Marking the body where it needed to be cut and using the dremel tool with a cut off wheel the cuts began.
Moving next to the rear of the body and using both a Cut off wheel and a barrel sanding tip the rear back half of the jeep got bobbed!
Finally Shaving all of the nubs and sratches out of the body with 80 grit sand paper and removing some of the finish on the body it started to look like a crawler!
4. The Next step in the process was going to the bottom of the Body/tub and removing all protruding mounts and nubs that would effect the mounting of the new chassis(Not finish yet).
In the process of removing the extra peices and cutting off the nubs I also removed the inner fenders and smoothed the firewall of the body. Using again the Barrel sander and a cut off wheel the Cuts started to take shape. Removing all unnessasary parts including the mounts for the Radiator section (Peices will be manufactured to replace). Lines where drawn on the under body to show the width of the new Frame Rails!
The Final step in the Current project, became bobbing the front fenders as well as Cutting the Side openings just a little bit to smooth the look of the body.
When we finished with the body it was time to start smoothing the body out with 120 grit paper and finishing up an extra cuts that needed to be made to the body. Including removing a couple of hood marks and molding lines in the hood.
This project will be a long one, but hopefully when its finished it will compete with the best of them.
Future plans include the installation of a Small block Chevy Model engine from Monogram as well as creating a Box for the Electronics (ESC and Reciever). Color is undetermined..
The Wheels that will be used are Chrome Clod rims or maybe Jugger naut Rims, as well as Juggenaut Tires.
Shocks will be 4" Aluminum Shocks, and this will have a Roll Cage installed.
Keep checking back on this project to see how it grows!
Thanks
Tom
