[glow=red,2,300]I ask that all of you who like to drive fast and not wear a seatbelt PLEASE don't put your family members through what I went through. On Friday Night my niece was in a car accident. The car rolled and threw her out of the hatch window of a Honda CRX. She was not wearing her seatbelt nor was the person that was driving. Speed was the factor in this crash. When she was thrown the car could have rolled ontop of her. I hope to have some photos to make you understand that it was a miracle that her and her friend was able to walk away. I found out all of this on Saturday ( the next day ) this also was my Birthday. Talk about news that can tear someone up. I didn't know the extent of her injuries or what condition she was in until I saw her for my own eyes. After she was released I went and saw the car you don't know how bad my heart sunk knowing that she could have died. I would have not even thought about celebrating my Birthday I would have been watching my brother and his wife plan her funeral.[/glow] [glow=red,2,300]For any of you how have children or if you are a teen I beg you PLEASE WEAR YOUR SEATBELT AT ALL TIMES AND SLOW DOWN. It could cost you more that just a ticket.[/glow]

Sorry to her that Tonni. I refuse to be in a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt, nor will I allow anybody to ride in mine without wearing one. I use to hate them, but with the company I work for, you get caught 1 time and you get fired. Taught me to get use to wearing one all of the time.

alright i didnt want to get involved with this but I did some thinking first before posting this so here's my opinion.
You mentioned speed above as like the factor for the crash. I believe Speed is never the cause of a crash its the drive and his/her ability to control their vechial in the conditions they are driving in. Just as it is there responsiablity to protect them selfs (ie. wearing a seatbelt)
I do not understand if why people would not atleast put on a standard seat belt if they are going to be a ricer and try being all cool.
The problem with today's teenagers is they are all into this ricer stuff and get these somewhat or actually fast cars that they do not have the ability to control. It takes experiance just as well as thinking knowledge. If you race, You don't win a race because of the fast speed or fastest lap times, you when by using your head. Otherwise you be like James Stewart in Motocross. Crashing every 5 seconds.
This is just my opinion and I know people will agree with some of the information I stated above.
I am assuming it was Kara involved and Yes I am wishing her the best on her way to recovery.
If you'd like to see some nasty roll over pictures, my brother flip his jeep a few years back also was not wearing a seatbelt had the roll bar roll over his leg and he too escape from it. I have pictures of how much damage was actually done too.

Hi Tonni, Sorry, to hear the bad news. Hope Kara is fine. I hope you are OK Too as well as Tom and his health problems? I agree with PDBR and Twistedtrik fully on the way these kids don't bother to buckle-up and drive like loonatics on city streets. It is worse here near Chicago. They all think they are starring in the Fast and the Furious. I know I'm sounding OLD! But I just don't see the reasoning behind all the speed in city areas.
On the lighter side My little woman might be stepping up to the R/C Driver seat I found her a used Savage she said she was willing to give it a whirl to spend more time with me. She is looking forward to meeting you and Tom.
So, you might get to meet her if she come to the show next year or if I can talk her into coming to the Parade. Otherwise you might meet her when you come to the hobbyshow in OCT.

as pdb said, speed does not cause crashes unless going over at least 135, which a lot of cars cant do because of the speed controler that shuts of the engine, i have been driving for about 3 years now, i control cars perfectly. I speed like crazy though, and i have never had 1 crash. I shift gears in automatic cars that makes them jump. I do that to people who move slowly, because when i shift, my car jumps to their bumper. If you know how to control a car, you will have a small chance of crashing, and always seatbelts mean life, not wearing a seatbelt means death, and im sorry for your loss.

I agree that speed is not the leading cause of accidents, but it can contribute. Sure you may be able to control your car while going fast, but on a public street you can not control the other people who don't see you comming that fast. I ride a motor cycle most of the time, and I have to keep a very close eye on the other 1000 people who don't even bother looking for me. I have been very lucky to have not had an accident on my bike. But as I am sure Tom will say, it will happen. Speed doesnt cause the accidents, it is human error. In my car I always wear my belt!!! I have 3 kids and I want to set a good example for them.

speed can very well be the cause of an accident as the cars going faster then can be or should be going in a given situation.most cases maybe the other driver.also, wear seat belts all the time in any car-truck.some people think they have air bags and that protection think it's enough.let me tell you it's not.i went to tow an accident one time and the car hit a parked car and there was a big star in the pass side front windshield and me and the driver thought to bad for the pass for not wearing the seat belt.turns out there was no pass, what happened was the driver when he hit the parked car,the bag deployed and he slid around the airbag and his head hit the windshield on the pass side.if he had his belt on he'd walk away with no injury at all.sorry to hear about your niece and hope her and her friend are ok.i've seen many cars mangled from accidents in my field

Yes what speed says is true. Air bags can acutally KILL you if you dont have your seatbelt on. They are made to work in unison with the seat belt for the maximum safety effort. Speed can also cause the crash, because in some cars, their supension cannot handle the speed therefore you will lose control and crash it. That's why there are tracks with rules and regs, if you feel the need to speed, speed on the track, and not on the road.

Coming from the street racing background...We raced REAL cars, not these 4 bangers with turbos and nos. I enjoyed every single saturday night racing. I seen many accidents happen. Some not bad, other were pretty bad. It finally took one of my good friends getting killed less than 100 feet from my eyes before I realized how unsafe street racing actually was. We ran on a marked 1/4 mile strip and there was really no traffic at all. There happen to be some new guy out there running up and down all night long. He was driving a super charged grandprix. My friend had about a 5 month old Trans Am. Long story short, He pulled down into the lane to leave and never saw this guy coming and got T-boned. After DPS investigations were done, The computer in the guys grandprix said he was doing 118 MPH upon impact. The driver suffered a broken leg....My friend was killed instantly. After that we started racing at the local drag track where racing was more controlled. Just wanted to share that information.

That sucks man. And also, racing back when muscle cars ruled was alot safer, they were pure metal. Now cars are small and plastic, and a 40 mph head on can be deadly.
